{"id":1486,"date":"2018-12-20T14:27:02","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T14:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/?p=1486"},"modified":"2018-12-20T14:27:02","modified_gmt":"2018-12-20T14:27:02","slug":"new-beginnings-at-the-end-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/?p=1486","title":{"rendered":"New beginnings at the end of the year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have fallen into an accidental pattern of working over the last few years: I have published a book in October or November, spent the remainder of the year promoting it, and then started the new year with a new project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/A4E7097F-7197-4DD8-8540-A26D1965E5E3.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-1481 size-thumbnail alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/A4E7097F-7197-4DD8-8540-A26D1965E5E3-e1544093449770-120x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>But 2018 has been slightly different. Perhaps because I published my latest rhyming picture book &#8211;\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/?page_id=1315\"><strong>Jacob Starke Loves The Dark<\/strong><\/a> &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>a few weeks early, in September, but I am coming to the end of the year having already written an 800 word rhyming text for my next book <strong>and\u00a0<\/strong>started the sketches for the main characters. There\u2019s even a chance I will have mapped out some of the pages before Christmas lunch hits the table.<\/p>\n<p>Which is all very un-me. Having been a journalist for many, many years (yes, I know, my looks belie my great age), I can\u2019t usually do so much as put my socks on in the morning without a deadline (even a self-imposed one). It\u2019s not something I\u2019ve done before, but when I took part in the author\u2019s panel at the Isle of Wight Literacy Festival Youth Zone in October, I heard from the other authors that this is a way that many of them prefer to work. I can see the potential benefits. When I work on writing and illustrations at the same time, the two things feed off each other.
