{"id":782,"date":"2017-03-02T10:08:36","date_gmt":"2017-03-02T10:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/?p=782"},"modified":"2017-03-02T10:08:36","modified_gmt":"2017-03-02T10:08:36","slug":"world-book-day-top-five-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/?p=782","title":{"rendered":"World Book Day Top Five: 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I thought as it&#8217;s World Book Day, I&#8217;d share five of the picture books I most wish I&#8217;d written.<\/p>\n<p>So (as Dermot O&#8217;Leary would say, were he here), in no particular order:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1: <em>Once Upon A Time<\/em> by John Prater<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/c7406972.myzen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_2032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-785 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/c7406972.myzen.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_2032-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2032\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_2032-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_2032-768x574.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_2032-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dogpigeon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/IMG_2032-624x466.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why do I wish I&#8217;d written I?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because it&#8217;s so\u00a0<strong>clever.\u00a0<\/strong>I love the subversiveness of picture books where the words tell a story, but the pictures tell so much more, or even a different story altogether.\u00a0<em>We&#8217;re Going on a Bear Hunt,\u00a0<\/em>by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury is a prime example, but\u00a0<em>0nce Upon A Time\u00a0<\/em>takes it to the nth degree. The words tell of a mundane day at home with &#8216;Not much to see. Not much to do&#8217;. Meanwhile, in the pictures, every nursery rhyme creature you&#8217;ve ever heard of is running amok.
